How should you interpret email marketing statistics for your store?
Max Erikstedt, founder · Updated
What does the rate actually count?
Before comparing a report, name the numerator and denominator. Unique clickers divided by delivered messages is a different measure from clicks divided by recorded opens. Total clicks also differ from people who clicked. Confirm the platform definition before placing the rates beside each other. Otherwise a change in reporting can look like a change in customer behavior when the underlying activity has not changed.
Keep the audience, time period and filtering method with your notes. An engaged customer segment and a broad subscribed audience are not interchangeable samples. Automated clicks or privacy-related opens may need specific handling. Klaviyo's campaign analytics definitions is a starting point for the account definitions; use the relevant current documentation and avoid transferring an unexplained formula from another platform.
Why should open statistics be treated carefully?
An open usually depends on a tracked image loading, not a confirmed human reading every word. Privacy features and automatic image loading can affect the record. Apple explains how its protection works in Mail Privacy Protection. A rise in recorded opens therefore cannot establish that more people read the offer or intended to buy.
Use the limitations when designing tests and audience rules. Do not assume non-openers are the exact group who ignored a message, and do not call a subject line successful only because the open report increased. Read meaningful clicks and orders, keep conditions comparable and acknowledge when the account cannot resolve the question. A useful report shows what is known and what remains uncertain.
| Review area | Ask before sending | Keep with the record |
|---|---|---|
| Audience | Why is this relevant to the recipient? | Segment and exclusions |
| Content | Does the promise match the destination? | Offer and product source |
| Measurement | Are definitions comparable? | Reporting settings |
| Ownership | Who checks and approves the change? | Explicit approval |
What does clicked revenue mean, and what does it not mean?
Clicked revenue means order value attributed to a recorded click within the chosen reporting rules. Revenue per recipient divides attributed revenue by a recipient count; it is not another name for total clicked revenue. Likewise, broader attributed email revenue may include a different interaction model. Keep these labels separate so the report does not claim a method it did not use. Klaviyo explains the reporting window in Understanding message attribution.
A click before an order does not prove the email created an additional purchase. Other channels, an existing intention to buy and the store experience can contribute. Different reporting tools may credit the same order under their own rules. Do not add channel claims as if they were mutually exclusive sales. Keep the attribution window and currency visible when discussing changes in the store's report.
How should you use published benchmarks?
Treat a benchmark as a description of its sample, not a target that applies to every store. Read the source page for the date, region, category, denominator and whether the figure is a mean or median. A quoted percentage without those details is not a dependable basis for a decision. This guide deliberately avoids unsupported benchmark numbers rather than turn an uncertain source into a confident claim.
Use an external report to ask a better question about your own account. If results differ, investigate audience, assortment, offers, sending behavior and methodology before changing everything to match the average. A store with expensive, infrequently purchased products is not directly comparable to a repeat-purchase brand. When a source does not explain the sample or method, label the limitation or leave the number out of your review.
How do you turn the plan into a reliable approval process?
Keep a shared brief with the campaign purpose, intended audience, product links, photos and any offer terms. The person preparing the email should be able to build it without guessing what the discount covers or whether a product is available. Mark unresolved information clearly rather than filling gaps with assumptions. A useful brief is a working record, not a presentation that nobody updates.
Name the person who gives final approval and agree where feedback belongs. Collect comments in the same place so a corrected price does not get lost between email threads. Send an inbox test with the real links and ask the reviewer to check the offer, products and wording. Do not schedule until approval is explicit. If a deadline changes, update both the email and the linked store page before repeating the test.
How should you review results without confusing attribution with proof?
After a send, read the result alongside its purpose. A product launch and a customer-care message do not have identical jobs. Start with delivered messages, meaningful clicks, orders linked to clicks and unsubscribes. Keep the same definitions and reporting settings when comparing periods. An impressive open rate does not establish that somebody read the email or bought because of it.
Clicked revenue is money attributed to a recorded click within the account's configured window. It is not the same as total store revenue, and it does not prove incremental sales. Record the reporting window, currency and campaign names with your notes. If stock, price or site performance changed, include that context before blaming the creative. Finish the review with a practical next change, such as a more relevant destination or clearer product explanation, rather than a promise about future revenue.
What does Flowsplash handle, and what stays with your brand?
Flowsplash is a newsletter studio that designs, writes and sends Klaviyo newsletters for e-commerce brands. Our Newsletters plan includes 8 sends per 4 weeks for €990 or $990, excluding VAT. We plan the period together, write and design the emails, build and test them in your Klaviyo, check inbox placement and schedule after your approval. Your software subscription remains separate.
The Newsletters + Flows plan costs €1,390 or $1,390 per 4 weeks, excluding VAT. It adds welcome, abandoned cart and checkout, browse abandonment, post-purchase and winback flows, with a quarterly review. Flows are not sold separately. Both plans have a 12-week start period, then run month to month with 30 days notice. You provide products, photos and things to promote. We work in your account, never export your lists and leave everything we build with you.
FAQ
Is there a universal benchmark we should follow?
No. Start with your audience, products and reporting definitions. A published average does not describe your exact store. Use it to ask a better question, then review your own data and the context behind the campaign before changing the production plan.
Can we use our current Klaviyo account?
Yes. The ongoing service works in your own account with an invited user, and the assets stay there. You do not need to hand over an owner password. Review access and ownership alongside the scope before starting.
Who approves the newsletter before scheduling?
You do. A test send gives you the opportunity to check the content, products, links and offer. Explicit approval is required before scheduling. If information changes afterwards, correct and test the relevant parts again rather than relying on an old approval.
Can we see the approach before paying?
Start with the free redesign. Forward your last 2 newsletters. We redesign them within 3 business days, then walk through them in 15 minutes. There is no obligation to continue with either ongoing plan.
